In Namibia, he was struck by a landscape as astounding as it was limitless. Trees, centuries-old scorched black by the hot sun, stood tall on a white clay pan surrounded by soaring red sand dunes. Colorful colonial homes, long vacant, sat filled with sand. A trillion stars lit up the night sky. In the solitude of the oldest desert on the planet time seemed to stand still.
